Beta vulgaris
An oblong beetroot suitable for storage. Gives a high yield of solidly coloured intense red beetroot without "rings" in the colour. Excellent for slicing for pickling due to its oblong shape. Due to the oblong shape they can be sown more closely and give bigger harvests from the same footprint, making them a great choice for vertical, container and urban gardening . The young leaves can be used in the same way as chard.
'Forono' is resistant to bolting and known for it's excellent sweet flavour.
Don't sow too early! The plants may flower if exposed to spring frost. They will then not produce a harvest. Thrive in nutrient-rich, humus-rich and moisture-retaining soil. Thin early. Loosen the soil around the plants. Fertilise with potassium-rich fertilisers.
The leaves are nutritious and can be used as chard.
Direct seeding: Maj-June. Do not sow too early as they will bolt if exposed to a late frost. Water before sowing and keep moist until the seeds germinate. Soak the seeds for a few hours before sowing for faster germination. Each beet "seed" actually contains many seeds. If you get many seedlings at the same spot, thin them out by removing all but the strongest.
