Brassica oleracea
A very nice and reliable variety, which produces large heads with a relatively short main stem. Later in the season, small side shoots can also be harvested. Grows best in clayey, humus-rich and well-drained soil, but lighter soils also work well. Water when dry.
Harvest the central spear first with a sharp knife, as this encourages the side shoots to develop quickly. Regular picking extends cropping time.
Pre-cultivation: From mid-March, 4-6 weeks before planting out. Sow on moistened seed soil. Cover thinly with soil. Keep moist and keep warm 22°C. After emergence, bright and cooler. When the plants are big enough to handle, place 1/pot in fertilized soil. Harden off the plants before transplanting out.
Direct sowing: April - mid-June. Can be sown directly when soil temp. is at least +5°C, but pre-cultivation is recommended.
Protect from pests with net.
