Lactuca sativa
A fine variety that produces green, firm and dense heads. Very good taste and heat resistance. Produces large, firm heads with crisp leaves, Long harvest period.
Repeated sowing provides access to fresh lettuce all summer. Thin out before the plants start to crowd and then harvest whole plants as they grow. Also excellent for continual harvest of outer leaves.
Thrives in a humus-rich, moisture-retaining and well-drained soil. Water regularly.
Good source of vitamin A.
Trivia: Calmar variety is of "Great Lakes" parentage and adapted to coastal California early spring harvest. The name 'Calmar' combines "cal" from California with the Spanish word for sea "mar".
Pre-cultivation: Mid-March -mid-May for earlier harvest, 3-4 weeks before planting out.
