Origanum majorana L.

Easily grown herb with a woodsy flavour, with pine and citrus notes, often used in pea soup, on pizza and in meat sauce. In the same plant family as the herb oregano. Also used for tea and makes a lovely garnish. Low growing plant with inconspicuous white flowers that attract pollinators. A perennial usually cultivated as an annual in cooler climates. Harvest leaves as needed, or dry for later use. For drying, whole stems are harvested before the plant flowers and hung upside down to dry. Thrives best in open loamy soil, not too muddy.

Pre-cultivation: May-mid June. Sow several seeds/pot. Cover with plastic or place in a mini-greenhouse and keep the seed moist. After emergence, place in a light and cool place. Plant out after frost.

Direct sowing: May-mid June. Water the seedbed before sowing. Cover very thinly with soil. Keep the seed moist until the seeds germinate.
