Calendula officinalis L.
Annual, easy-to-grow, bright-bloom flowers that bloom all summer. This plant is compact, its blooms are bright, both full and semi-full. Suitable for growing in flower beds, pots and balcony beds.
Bright flowers are picked for small bouquets, suitable for teas and as food decoration (the flowers are edible). Tip - clip off the white base of the petals if you find them bitter.
The plants are very vigorous and grow quickly. Blooms from June until frost. It does not require special soil conditions and blooms most abundantly in the sun. It can protect nearby plants from diseases and pests.
Useful in the kitchen garden against aphids - they despise the scent.
If the seeds are allowed to ripen, they self-sow perfectly. It is recommended to thin out densely germinated plants. 0.5 g – about 55 seeds. 0.5 g is sufficient for an area of 1.5–2.0 m2.
Thrives in sun to partial shade in normal garden soil. Not particularly demanding.
Besides "pot marigold" calendula is also called "poor man's saffron".
Direct sowing: April in the greenhouse, May outside. Water the seedbed before sowing. Keep moist until the seeds germinate.
