Cucurbita pepo L.
Very early, high-yielding bush-type hybrid resistant to pseudoperonospora cubensis and ideal for containers and small gardens, producing lush green fruits without rambling vines. Fruits are oblong, with a thin, shiny, dark green and edible skin. Fruits are crisp and succulent with a slightly sweet flavor. Suitable for preserving, frying, steaming, stuffing and stir fries. Courgettes are planted in the ground after frost.
Harvest 2ā3 times per week. Grows best in fertile soil, in the sun, in areas protected from the wind. Thrives in a warm, quiet and sunny place in humus-rich, well-fertilized and well-drained soil. Water abundantly.
Harvest early, don't let the squash get too big. The large eye catching yellow flowers are in themselves considered a special delicacy in the kitchen if prepared.
Summer squash providesĀ vitamins A, B6, and C, folate, magnesium.
Grown vertically, plants may needĀ supportĀ as they start to bear fruit.
Pre-cultivation: May, 3-4 weeks before planting out after the last frost. Sow 1 seed/pot in fertilized soil. Set warm for germination 18-24°C. Replant after a couple of weeks into a larger pot. Be gentle with the roots when replanting. Place the plants in good light.
Direct sowing: When the soil is 15°C, May-June. Water the soil before sowing. Keep the seed moist. Cover with fiber cloth until the plants start to flower.
