Dwarf runner bean 'Hestia'
Dwarf runner bean 'Hestia'
Phaseolus coccineus
Eye-catching scarlet bean that produces beautiful red and white flowers and dark reddish beans. Broad, flat, stringless pods with a good taste. Low-growing, decorative bean suitable for growing in containers. Water well during flowering. Should be harvested while the pea pods are still narrow. Thrives best in well-drained, loam-rich and moisture-retaining soil in a protected plant location.
Do not eat beans uncooked.
Pre-cultivation: 2-3 weeks before planting out after the last frost. Very good variety for northern climates. Sow 1 seed per pot/cell and keep moist. Warm (+25ºC) during germination then room temperature with adequate light after sprouting.
Direct sowing: Do not sow until the soil temperature is +15°C. Soak the seeds for a day before sowing. Water before sowing and keep moist until germination. Covering with fiber-cloth keeps the birds from finding them first!
