Stevia
Stevia
Stevia rebaudiana
A beautifully decorative leafy plant that is grown in pots, both indoors and outdoors. The plant originates in South America. The small leaves are used as a natural sweetener and they are said to be about 300 times sweeter than sugar. The sweet leaves are nice to chew on as a sweet treat (though not easily digestable, so don't swallow). Add them to smoothies, or dry them and ground to powder for use as a sweetener in the kitchen.
Can be stored indoors in winter, bright and cool.
Pre-cultivation: March - April. Sow sparsely in moist soil. Do not cover with soil but preferably with vermiculite. Keep moist, cover with plastic. Place the seed in approx. 18-20°C. Germinates in about 1-3 weeks. After emergence, place in a light and cool place. Use extra lighting when sowing early.
Overwintered plants must be moved indoors.
