Allium schoenoprasum
Easy to grow, perennial herb. This variety produces narrow leaves with a very fine aroma and mild onion flavour. The leaves are used fresh in salads, with herring, egg dishes, new potatoes etc. They can also be frozen for winter use.
Sowing in October can give earlier germination in the spring.
Thrives on loamy calcareous soil, preferably clay soil, but unassuming.
Pre-cultivation: March - mid May. Sow in clusters of 5-10 seeds per pot or seed cell. Place cool and bright. Keep moist. Plant out in May.
Direct sowing: May - mid Aug. Early, as soon as the soil can be cultivated until August. Sow in clusters of 5-10 seeds with 30 cm between the clusters. Can also be sown outside in October for an earlier germination in the spring.
