Cucurbita pepo

Yellow summer squash, also called yellow zucchini or yellow squash. Bushy growth habit makes it suitable for growing in a container.

Has yellow fruits that should be harvested early. Gives a good yield and also treats the eye with large yellow flowers - in themselves considered a special delicacy in the kitchen if prepared. Sun to partial shade in warm, porous, humus- and nutrient-rich soil. Requires a lot of water.

Summer squash provides vitamins A, B6, and C, folate, magnesium.

Grown vertically, plants may need support as they start to bear fruit.

Pre-cultivation: 3-4 weeks before planting out after the last frost. Sow 1 seed/pot in fertilized soil. Set warm for germination 18-24°C. Replant after a couple of weeks into a larger pot. Be gentle with the roots when replanting. Place the plants in good light.

Direct sowing: When the soil is 15°C. Water the soil before sowing. Keep the seed moist. Cover with fiber cloth until the plants start to flower.
