Brassica oleracea

A wonderfully decorative palm cabbage with long, narrow leaves that grow like a palm crown. The healthy black cabbage is used, among other things, in Italian cooking and is delicious in casseroles and pasta dishes. Black kale has a more earthy and less bitter flavour than curly green kale, with an almost nutty sweetness.

Harvest leaves as needed from about 3 months after sowing. Frost resistant.

Other names for Tuscan kale are Italian kale, dinosaur kale, flat back kale, cavolo nero, palm tree kale, Lacinato kale and black Tuscan palm.

Pre-cultivation:  April-mid June, or 4-6 weeks before planting out. Sow on moistened seed soil. Cover thinly with soil. Keep moist. Set warm, 22°C. After emergence, bright and cooler. When the plants are big enough to handle, put 1 plant/pot in fertilized soil. Harden off the plants before planting out.

Direct sowing: April-mid June or when the soil is at least +5°C. Water the seedbed before sowing. Keep the seed moist until the seeds germinate. Pre-cultivation gives the best results.
