Silverskin onion is an extra mild and sweet cooking onion with a lovely aroma. It is fast-growing and also goes well raw in salads, for hamburgers and other dishes. Excellent onion for pickling. A close relative to leek.
Pearl onions even contain chemical compounds that have health benefits such as promoting cardiovascular health and stabilizing blood sugar levels, and acting as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
Can be direct sown in warmer climates, should be pre-cultivated in cooler climates for normal-sized bulbs. Small onions can be used as pickled onions. Thrives in loamy, preferably calcareous soil. Water when dry for better harvest. Cover with fiber cloth against the pests.
Also known as pearl onion, baby onion and button onion.
Pre-cultivation: March-April. Sow sparsely in moistened seed soil, set at room temp. After emergence, bright and cool. Plant out after the last frost.
Direct sowing: April - May. Early when the soil can be cultivated - May. Water the furrow before sowing. Keep the seed moist until the seeds germinate.
